On Monday 14/01/2019 we had the pleasure of listening to Dr. Joaquín Castilla, Research Professor from CICbioGUNE talk to us about the fascinating subject of cloning. In a very entertaining presentation he explained what is cloning, its history in the world of science and research and the present day techniques and developments regarding the cloning of animals.
This topic forms part of the 4thESO Biology course and it was good to be able to confirm what we had studied is valid, and very interesting to see how theoretical studies are actually part of the everyday workings of a company here in the Basque Country. Unfortunately time was limiting and we were left wanting more. It would have been great to be able to question the practicalities of such laboratory work and delve a bit more into the theory, we only got a mention of the CRISPR/Cas genome editing technique which is allowing for incredible advancements in genetic engineering.
Many thanks to Dr. Castilla for giving so generously of his time and expertise. It was a very interesting talk that enabled us to see that there is more to the world of biology than just medicine!
